So you have had enough of buying surfboards and wanna have a go at making your own hey! Well as a former professional surfboard maker who has worked in ALL areas of surfboard production, I can tell you, it ain’t as easy as you think! Lots of things can go wrong and lots of things can cut your fingers off!
What you need is a great text book that covers everything you could possibly want to know about surfboard production both professionally and for the backyard hobbyist. Well lucky for you a fella by the name of Howard Jennar has created just such a book!
Howard has created “The Surfer’s Textbook - Making a Surfboard”. Howard is a passionate surfer and obviously has plenty of experience himself in knocking out the odd stick as he is a leading educator in the fields of surfing at Southern Cross University so you are in for a treat when you open up and read through this book. Seriously you will start frothing! I haven’t made a board for sometime now as I retired from it but it made me wanna go and get itchy all over again! The book has taken over 12 years to research and compile and is an updated and much improved upon version of an earlier work released in 1985 called ” Making a Surfboard”.
Howard has created a manual style book that is informative and educational as well as highly instructional. You will learn about many and varied things such as surfboard production history, everything from blowing blanks to polishing and ALL things in between. This is not all about short board either…Howard has lots of information and instructions on how to create Mals, Paddle Boards, and even Canoes! There is a section on repairing damaged boards and a great section on restoration of older boards to their glory for collectors etc. This book contains information on using and making moulds, ALL the tools and equipment like stands etc you will need for surfboard prodcution. There is seriously so much contained in the pages of Howard’s book, that I can’t fit it on here! The book is very simple to understand and is very accurate in it’s instruction…something many before him have failed dismally at I might add! .
There is something in this for almost every surfer out there contemplating making their own board…I especially liked the section on artwork..some great featured work from some of the best! This is about the best instructional/educational type of surfboard manufacturing book I have ever seen, I wish it was around when I was starting out..would have saved me a lot of time, money and glaring errors! Whether you are looking to set up a serious board making/repairing venture or just want to make your own boards, you will be doing yourself a major favour by purchasing this book and following the advice of a genuine teacher with real world experience and knowledge.

Salt Water Buddha - Book Review

Every now and then someone gets it really right! As a life time surfer and life time practitioner of Buddhism, I rarely find a work of literature that manages to put into word what I find personally in surfing as far as making it part of my daily practice of Buddhism goes but Jaimal yogis has done just that with such elegance and grace that I lead to believe this man is a rare gift to not only the surfing world but the world in general. Buddhism is possibly the most beautiful way a person can live their life and surfing is very much an extension of that if you are clear minded enough to see it.
In a time when the world seems to be ready to self destruct a little, this book brings with it a message of fun, wisdom, inner exploration and a way to find and lose yourself in the most prevelent element on the planet, water. As surfers we all know the healing and revitalizing power water has but after reading this book you will look upon water with renewed vision and understandf possibly what it is that brings us back to the water day after day.
Jaimal writes with honesty and openess from personal experience and this makes for a truly indepth experential read for the viewer that allows them to become part of the experience and to indeed have their own to a certain degree. As you weave your way through the chapters you will find joy and contentment filling your belly and the grommets urge to get out there surging as we remember the feeling all over again…but this time with more clarity.
This is a totally cool book and is well worth the price and will make a timeless addition to anyone’s collection whether you are a surfer or not. Pick yourself up a copy today from www.jaimalyogis.com and begin the journey!

This is a really cool book! With surfing now being among the most popular pastimes and sports in this country, it is great to see someone like Chris Walton sparking the interest in our youngsters with a cool and educational books like this one. The book is illustrated by Chris as well and this is a real treat for the eyeballs of the littlies with great pictures depicting the fun involved with our great passion that is surfing and beach life! My kids couldn’t put it down! They must have read it a dozen times each and I have read it to them about a dozen more on top of that! They ask questions about the beach and surfing and because of this, it is a great way to introduce a positive attitude about not only surfing, but the beach environment to our kids. Let’sface it, kids are presented with plenty of insideous garbage daily so to spark an interest in what can ony be described as a healthy and natural persuit has gotta be all good!
Chris himself is a Geophysicist by profession but his passion for surfing and beachlife is evident when you visit his website here www.alphabetsurf.com where you will be able to find out more about Chris and where to pick up this great book for the microgrommies. The price for this book is $19.95 for a hardback. Great price and just in time for Xmas!! Do yourself a favour and make your budding young ripper happy this chrissy and grab one of these and start them off right. Oh, and did I mention Chris is a West Aussie?? Just keeps getting better hey! I give this little gem the full thumbs up folks. As a father and surf addicted one at that with two young kids that are headed the same way, it is a great buy for your tribe! Enjoy!
